The Physical Geography of South America

The Physical Geography of South America

Oxford University Press, USA March 29, 2007 / ISBN-10: 0195313410 / 368 pages PDF 12.5 MB

The Physical Geography of South America, the eighth volume in the Oxford Regional Environments series, presents an enduring statement on the physical and biogeographic conditions of this remarkable continent and their relationships to human activity. It fills a void in recent environmental literature by assembling a team of specialists from within and beyond South America in order to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about this mostly tropical continent, together with its high mountains and temperate southern cone. The authors systematically cover the main components of the South American environment - tectonism, climate, glaciation, natural landscape changes, rivers, vegetation, animals, and soils.

Microtectonics (REPOST)

Clássico da Geologia figuraça do Trouw... LINK CORRIGIDO

Springer | December 15, 2005 | ISBN-10: 3540640037 | 366 pages | PDF | 30.46 MB

This book deals with descriptions and interpretations of small-scale structures in deformed rock, as seen … through an optical microscope. The text fills a valuable niche, as many textbooks on structural geology do not discuss microscopic aspects of deformation … . The book is extremely well illustrated with some 322 figures … . The book explains basic principles in a simple form with considerable references, enabling the reader to obtain more in-depth information … . I recommend it as an addition to any geologist’s bookshelf.

Contaminated Urban Soils

Contaminated Urban Soils (Environmental Pollution) By Pete Shaner, Gerald Everett Jones
Publisher: Springer; 1st Edition. / edition 2010 / 318 Pages / ISBN: 9048193273 / PDF / 10.5 MB

This book gives a current overview of all facets of urban soils. Different urban land-use types in a number of examples worldwide are introduced. Many examples in different countries are provided in order to illustrate the situation in detail. The contaminant sources of urban soils (e.g., dust deposition, contamination along roadsides, contamination of floodplains, application of wastewater, anthropogenic deposits) are comprehensively presented. For practical application purposes a key with which to identify technogenic materials during field work is presented. Features like reductomorphic conditions in landfill soils, acidification of coal mining heaps and the impact of physical characteristics such as sealing are taken into consideration in the context of the contamination problem. The mobility of contaminants in the soils under consideration is introduced and discussed. The content of the book, however, is not limited to the description of contaminated urban soils. Different methods of assessment (classification, functional assessment, assessment focused on pathways with reference to standardized exposure scenarios) are introduced. Finally, quality standards for contaminated land in a number of countries are listed, compared and discussed. The book links up the contamination problem of urban soils with geographical aspects such as the historical development of city growth, the process of urbanization and the urban-to-rural gradients. Accordingly, the reader will be able to understand the specific problems of contaminated urban soils and will find sensible approaches to assessment.

Australian Landscapes

Bishop P., "Australian Landscapes - Special Publication 346"
Geological Society of London / December 15, 2010
English / ISBN: 1862393141 / 215 pages / PDF / ~ 9 Mb

Australian Landscapes provides an up-to-date statement on the geomorphology of Australia. Karst, desert, bedrock rivers, coasts, submarine geomorphology, biogeomorphology and tectonics are all covered, aided by the latest geochronological techniques and remote sensing approaches. The antiquity and enduring geomorphological stability of the Australian continent are emphasized in several chapters, but the cutting-edge techniques used to establish that stability also reveal much complexity, including areas of considerable recent tectonic activity and a wide range of rates of landscape change.

Groundwater Geophysics

Reinhard Kirsch, "Groundwater Geophysics: A Tool for Hydrogeology"
Publisher: S p r i n g e r / 2006 / ISBN: 3540293833 / PDF / 493 pages / 11.7 MB

Geophysical techniques can map the underground conditions apart from boreholes. The use of these methods for hydrogeological applications is demonstrated for mapping of porous aquifers, mapping of structural aquifers, determintation of groundwater quality (mineralization), geophysical assessment of hydraulic properties, determination of aquifer vulnerability, and mapping of comtaminated sites. Additionally, a description of applied geophysical techniques used for groundwater studies is given including seismics, resistivity methods, magnetics, and ground penetrating radar. Even advanced techniques like NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) are presented.

George Benson (REPOST)
